This is a week-long hiking oriented suggestion for the initiated hikers who want a less demanding route. The amount of hiking per day and the elevation will be 10km per day +/- 600m. The excellent choice of the local taverns and restaurants for the everyday lunch make this hiking trip a unique travel experience of nature, food and Greek culture.

Halkidiki is a majestic three-pronged peninsula in Northern Greece; it is a local favorite as a vacations destination, with spectacular natural beauties and home to Mount Athos, a World Heritage Site and self-governed state consisting of 20 Eastern Orthodox monasteries. The peninsula is a land of hidden treasures, home to a coast of 500 kilometers in length. It possesses countless world-famous beaches of superb quality, most of which have acquired the trademark ‘’blue flag’’ sign.

Day 1: Arrival your hotel at Marmaras Region from Thessaloniki Airport

Day 2: Nikiti – Ag. Nikolaos

This walk is a route with two options. One short route (5,5km) which goes directly to Agios Nikolaos. The long route uses a road who leads in Agios Georgios chapel and then in village. Mainly uses forest tracks to cross over the hill behind Nikiti to visit the small town of Ag. Nikolaos. The start of the walk is beside the school in Nikiti. Coming from the north turn left at the traffic lights and find a parking place along the roadside (taxi place). Following the main road who leads in old Nikiti (traditional houses and rock roads), there are signs to Agios Nikitas church and start of hike. Also, a must sightseeing is the old chapel above the prime school of Agios Nikolaos with 146 steps to climb and a nice view of the sigitikos gulf. Lunch at Ag.Nikolaos square on a traditional tavern.

 Day 3: Elia Beach – Ag. Pavlos – Summit Petros – Elia Beach

This high-level easy route is a circular walk starts at the roadside just opposite the back entrance to the Athena Palace Hotel at Elia Beach in a farm of olive trees. It is an easy woodland walk along forest roads and narrow tracks, which give fine views of the coastline and beyond. The walk visits the church to Paul the Apostle on the hill above Elia Beach and also summit “Petros” (298m), the very large rock, with a trig point on its summit, which pokes up through the trees (25m scrambling to reach the summit). This is the highest point on the ridge and those with a good head for heights can ascend the rock to enjoy the excellent views over the peninsula. Ag. Paulus (The church of St Paul the Apostle) is built near an ancient spring with very pure water.

Day 4: Parthenonas (Mt. Itamos-summit Dragoudeli)

This long walk visits the very old village of Parthenonas and the walker has the opportunity to visit and explore rare forest roads of Mt. Itamos. Also, from Profitis Ilias chapel to Diaporos island is one of the most incredible views to hike. Furthermore, hike pass from Psaria, a wonderful forest area with benches and water where you can have a traditional bbq with greek tastes.

Day 5: Porto Carras – Coastal walk

A route that follows the beautiful coastline with its many sandy bays to the south of Porto Carras. The route is mostly along a traffic-free road and one returns by the same route so the length of the walk can be changed to suit the weather and other circumstances. On reaching the farthest point at the vehicle barrier it is possible to continue another 2 kilometers to a beach taverna if desired. The start point for both of these walks is Kohi Beach, just beyond the Porto Carras Marina. From the car park at Kohi Beach walk south on the road past the barrier. The road climbs and turns to the left at its highest point curving round and descending to pass round a small sandy bay. Soon large metal gates block the way for vehicles, but walkers can pass through. Of course, the hiking goes to remote beaches who can have a swim.

Day 6: Porto Koufo – Kapros – Porto Koufo

This easy walk starts at the beautiful natural harbor of Porto Koufo on the west coast of Sithonia. The route uses farm and goat tracks to reach Kapros the remote southern peak of the peninsula. The path passes through an area rich in flora and fauna and fine views can be obtained from Kapros of the precipitous cliffs along the coast. On a fine day, the Sporades Islands can be seen to the southwest.

Porto Koufo featured in recent history. The fine natural harbor with its very deep waters made it an excellent base for the German U-boats based in the Eastern Mediterranean. Remains of a concrete water reservoir and antiaircraft gun platforms can still be seen on the summit of Kapros. Lunch at a fish tavern at Porto Koufo.

Day 7: Thessaloniki walking tour

The capital of northern Greece, a city with a continuous history of more than 2.000 years, has an enviable reputation for good food and patisserie, culture and romantic atmosphere. On the crossroad of East and West, conquered by the Romans and the Ottomans, Thessaloniki became the co-capital of the Byzantine Empire and the ‘Jerusalem of the Balkans’. A cosmopolitan and wealthy city with rich commercial and cultural activity over time, Thessaloniki is still considered the most attractive and influential urban center of Greece. The highlights of this tour are the panorama of the city from White Tower and tasting local sweets and traditional products.

Route: Historical centre of Thessaloniki, Walk on the traditional neighborhood of Upper Town, Stop at the Byzantine church of St. Demetrius, Stop at the Roman Forum, Aristotelous Square / Coffee Break / Kapani Market, Stop at the Byzantine church of Hagia Sophia, Stop at the Galerius Imperial Complex (Navarinou Square), Visit to the Arch of Galerius (Kamara) and to St. Georges Church (Rotonda).
