Lake Plastira is the perfect location for mountain sports, and all sorts of outdoor activities such as biking, horseback riding, canoeing, water bicycling, paragliding, and sailplaning.
Lake Plastira is a man-made marvel in reality. A Greek general, later prime minister, Nicholas Plastiras, had the idea in 1928. Years later, the dam and the lake became a reality and he became its ‘godfather’. The lake became his gift to future generations. With blue water, beaches, and fir trees, people enjoy the landscape in every possible way. It’s a must-see sight!
Surely you cannot go to Lake Plastira and not visit its dam. It is located in the southern part and it is a 220 meters wide structure that keeps the lake water. In the dam area, you will find some shops on the street selling products such as honey and spoon sweets.
One of the most important sights of the lake is the Botanical Garden, located between the villages of Neochori and Kalyvia Pezoulas.
Around the lake area, you can practice a variety of activities including horse riding, archery, water bicycle, canoe kayak, mountain bike next to the lake, and hiking through marked trails in the educational forest Belokomiti.
For those who prefer the mountain activities such as skiing and/or snowboarding, there is the Agrafa Ski Resort located in the Karamanoli area. The route to the ski center and the shelter, especially in wintertime with the snow covering everything, is enchanting, the mountain tops overwhelm you.
Neochori is the largest village around the lake. It may have become the largest village due to the location it is built since it is in an advantageous position because of its view of the lake. It is the "balcony" of Lake Plastira with many options for hotels and restaurants. In Neochori you will find several places to stop and enjoy the lake view, basketball courts, squares, and beautiful alleys to wander around the village.
Anthochori is another nearby village worth visiting. Before you reach Anthochori, on a road turn leave your car aside, and see the renovated watermill there, you will find the path that starts for the Anthochorian waterfall. Τhe duration of the path is about an hour. A longer trail and more difficult is the one to the stone bridge of Anthochori but if you are a hiking person type, you definitely need to try it.
